Recent Deal vs Latin perspective

Anonymous
My kid got into Latin 2nd for 5th. At a Deal feeder close enough they'll be able to walk to Deal in 6th (about a mile). Commute to work not too far from Latin so location is not a major con. I like the smaller environment of Latin but unsure it's worth giving up neighborhood feel we're currently in.

Anyone have any recent comparisons or pros/cons to share?

There was a recent thread about this but the. bottom line is you can always go to Deal. This is your only shot at Latin.

I’ve found that proximity to school matters more the older kids get, especially for social reasons, because 14-18 year olds can easily navigate their own neighborhood and even nearby neighborhoods independently, but you might not want your 16 year old crossing town alone at 9 pm. Only one consideration, of course, and which school it favors depends on where you live.

I tried searching. Most recent threads also brought in Basis to conversation or were years old. Was hoping for these two comparisons and more recent feedback on Latin.

Being a mile from middle school is extremely nice. I would not give it up. But, if you dont love your elementary school or are truly undecided, you could try the commute to Latin for 5th and then reassess. Also think about high school now.

Thanks. That's what I'm thinking about. I think my kid would enjoy the smaller size of Latin vs J.R.

Have you done the latin tour/shadow day? We were faced with this choice last year and were really impressed with latin (though ultimately chose Deal for reasons unrelated to academics). One thing I wished I had done is also gone to a Deal open house so I better understood what I was comparing. Good luck with your choice!

It's like choosing between a small college and a big university, with all the pluses and minuses that go with each.

JKLM family here who LOVES Latin. Commute is not an issue because the Latin bus picks up/ drops off behind Whole Foods in Tenleytown. Deal was a no-go for us. The small classes/dedicated teachers/overall vibe at Latin is fantastic.

JKLM PP here, we also have an incoming Latin 2nd St 5th grader

Another Deal-feeder parent here with a rising-5th Latin offer. We also have an older child enrolled at Deal.

We have loved Deal for our current 6th grader. They are an athlete and have really thrived socially and academically at Deal.

But we are moving forward with Latin for our younger child. (Despite the logistical challenges). We know if it doesn’t work out, Deal will always be a good replacement.

+1 best decision we could make. For those concerned about friends across the city, my kids have become proficient at using Metro and have friends all over.
