| How much weight would being a published author with a highly reputable publisher carry? 250 page nonfiction book directly related to major. |
| When you say reputable, do you mean one of the big 5 in NYC? Or a university press? Or what? And if it has already come out, how many copies sold? |
| Little to none. It’s not peer reviewed so almost anyone can publish. |
| Copies sold? |
| Depends on what "highly reputable publisher" means to you, as a poster below points out. What other books do they publish? What was the submission process? The editorial process? Did you pay ANY money in relation to the publication of this book? |
| Nah. The AO's first reaction would be skepticism and a heavy eye roll. |
|
Is your kid aiming for a PhD?
Where is this going Op? Is this a humble brag or can you incapable of providing any context? |
| Publishing with Springer-Verlag or Cambridge University Press and other similar venues? Respect. Mickey Mouse publishers? Easy worthless, but some AOs somewhere will be impressed -- so do it. After all, isn't getting into elite schools, by hook or by crook, the only meaningful purpose in life? |
The poster didn't say anything about getting into elite schools. |

I know a children’s book published author who is at Duke.
And an Amazon self published author who got into Notre Dame early. I don’t think it’s unrelated; search published author on Reddit and you’ll see a lot of results |
| Encourage your kid to do what they enjoy. Not everything needs to be tied to chances of college acceptance. |
| well Christopher Paolini never went to college, apparently . . . |
| I am OP. I’m a student. Humanities major |
Okay. Good luck to you. As far as publication goes, it's going to be more impressive if you would be the one in position to make money from sales of your publication rather than you paying the publisher to produce your publication. |

Are we talking about Penguin Random House or Simon & Schuster or similar? Congratulations. You don't really need to go to college.
If it's some self-published whatever, you should go to college. But every professor will be thrilled to have a strong writer in their class. |
