Profile of Kindergartener in MCPS Learning Center?

What’s the general profile of a child who gets placed in a learning center for kindergarten? Thanks for any insight.

Used to be a place for kids who could succeed with a little more support - classes limited to 12 with a para, some went to gen ed classes for some subjects (one of my prior students went gen ed for math).

Currently, it's a dumping ground kids with huge behavior issues

Is this true of all learning centers? Our team has it "on the table" (plus general education) and we'll be discussing at the IEP, but our child doesn't have any behavior issues. We're zoned for Brooke Grove.

I'd be really wary of sending a kid there without behavior issues.....even if a class starts out calm, they may get placements during the year that make it out of control.

Until MCPS invests more money, a lot more, we are going to continue struggling with specialized programming.

Don't forget kids who should be in certificate track programs like LFI, SCB or Autism, but whose parents are in denial and refuse to sign Appendix A, so MCPS dumps them in the Learning Center instead of confronting the issue. Which probably also leads to behavior issues as the kids are frustrated with not being able to do what they're being asked.

My kid was in a learning center and did not have behavioral issues (yet) some years ago. We eventually went to private placement. At that age they are still teasing out who needs what.
