Why do the want a photocopy of my credit card?

Anonymous
I bid on something at an auction house and the auction house wanted a photocopy of my ID and credit card prior to allowing me to bid. I offered my ID but felt uncomfortable letting them take a photo of my card. I ended up being able to use a 3rd party website to bid with them without giving them these things and won and paid for the item. They don’t ship themselves and refer me to a local to them UPS store who has asked for the same. My shipping charges are $35. Why would they also be asking for these photos? This screams scammy right?

The UPS thing is weird. Are you sure it's a legitimate UPS? Obviously they need your credit card to process the payment but why a photo?

That’s what I’m thinking too. Why collect photos of the card and there is no way they’re securely storing this information. They are a real UPS store per Google.

Why are you keeping the auction house name secret.

Can you call the UPS and ask them how to arrange this?

I have shipped art from Australia and no one ever wanted my ID.

But OP is asking good questions. If they have her credit card info, why does a photo of it get them more information? What are people doing with that vs the number, exp date, name, 3-digit code?

I ended up going to target and buying a $50 visa gift card. I paid them that way.
