Middle school service hours?

Anonymous
Are middle school service hours required? Any difference in graduation or anything else if not all completed?
Do extra hours carry over to high school?

It depends on the school and class. Honors Civics at Carson requires hours. I have no clue what happens if they are not completed. My kid started submitting hours in 7th grade so he was done before 8th grade.

If your kid is in JNHS then they need hours before May.

Extra hours don’t move to HS, the hours need to be completed during the specific time period. Hours completed in 7th grade don’t count for JNHS until the kids are inducted at the end of 7th grade. HS hours need to be completed in HS.

It depends on the school. Normally this is for Civics, have your child ask the Civis teacher. I belive it is 10 hours at Carson.

This is what my kid @ Carson told me:

Civics service hours - 15 hours are due on May 8,
NJHS service hours - 10 hours are due on May 15.

But its better to check with your kid's school regarding total hours and due date. It may vary from school to school.

Kilmer didn’t need anything in the honors class but my kids didn’t want to be in NJHS. There is a requirement to stay in that.

Franklin hasn’t mentioned it at all to the 7th graders. If hours from 7th grade can count it would be nice to know. My child has some but hasn’t been shown how to log them or been told what the requirements will be. It can be difficult to get enough service hours all in 8th grade. Wish schools would take more initiative regarding this and explain it to both kids and parents when kids first come to middle schools.

My kid is a 7th grader at Carson, thank you for this! 25 hours will be very easy to get by double dipping with girl scouts.

Thank you. How many hours total are required? When and how are parents and students informed of the requirements? When do students learn how to log their hours? Why aren’t 7th graders told at the beginning do the year?

We have been very disappointed with Franklin so far. This is just one more thing.

They are told. Middle school is the start of kids being responsible for themselves. There is a website they are supposed to register on and log their hours.
