Over the past few years I've developed several sensitivities, specifically to dairy and now eggs. Because I stopped eating dairy like yogurt, cheese and cottage cheese, I was eating lots of eggs in the morning for protein. In the past few weeks I've thrown up the eggs within a few bites. I feel fine otherwise and after throwing up. The diary sensitivity is a more typical GI reaction. (details not needed here)
Do I go to a GI doctor, an allergist, or another type of doctor? I'm 57 years old and I never had any food allergies or sensitivities before menopause. Sorry for the TMI, I'm just trying to figure out where to start. |
| It usually makes sense to talk to your primary care. He or she may have some simple ideas to try first. They can also ask questions to try to determine the type of reaction you’re having and to make the appropriate referral. They may even give you lab work to complete before a specialist visit. |
| allergist food allergies are more common as you age |

I cannot eat chicken or eggs anymore. They make me ill.
|
| Just don’t eat eggs or dairy. Thats easy. Maybe check with a gastroenterologist, but unless it continues with other foods, I’d say it’s not important. |

It is not a easy. Eggs are a fountain of vitamins. |
| Ask your PCP. |
Yes. Primary care is, by definition, the first place you should go because 1) they may be able to diagnose and/or treat (or begin the process), or 2) they have the expertise to make the proper referral if necessary. |

Primary care doctor is going to say: well, don't eat dairy and eggs.
An allergist is going to be able to "confirm" that you are in fact allergic to these foods. Probably best to eliminate them - eat steel cut oatmeal with walnuts and fruit for breakfast and use almond milk in lieu of dairy. See if you feel better. Sometimes if you give your body a break for a few months, you could re-introduce. There is (probably) no pill any doc can give you to address this. |
