I've known 2 kids who have done this. One after freshman year and one after sophomore year. Both happy and thrived at Michigan.

The deadline passed for Fall 2026 and the application is currently closed but some of the schools within Michigan do take mid-year (Spring) transfers. LSA does, I believe.

Also, Michigan is one of the easiest strong schools to transfer to. They have around a 35% acceptance rate for transfers if not higher. Many of the others have a 1-2% acceptance rate.

It's worth a shot!

But do they prioritize in-state students like with freshman admissions?

No, it seems to be the reverse. They are need aware for transfers so it's pretty much full-pay only. They like the OOS money.

And that number considers in state kids who are currently at community colleges.
