6th Grade AAP Math 26-27 Calendar Year

Anonymous

Since FCPS is automatically opting in all AAP 6th graders into Algebra 1 for 7th grade going forward.

For the 26-27 school year, is the 6th AAP grade math curriculum going to be 7th grade math (same as 25-26 school) or change to pre algebra to more align with the new math sequence.

The 6th grade AAP curriculum has pretty much always been advanced pre-algebra.

OP Here: To clarify, I am hoping to get information about the curriculum for the AAP 6th graders that will not be taking Algebra 1 during the 26-27 calendar year. Thanks.

If that is the case why did the teachers think it was a big jump to go from AAP 6th grade math (learning 7th grade) to Algebra 1 in 7th grade? These kids had to take the IAAT test to show they were ready, it was not automatic (the way it will be this year and going forward).

Because some kids are math-inclined and learn and retain the advanced curriculum more quickly than their other AAP peers who might be more advanced in language arts. There were absolutely kids in my older child’s class who were not ready for A1H in 7th and needed the extra year in math 7H to reinforce the curriculum to be ready by 8th.

I’ll add, I think the most significant jump they’re trying to make is removing all testing requirements for rising 6th graders to enroll in A1H in 6th grade. That’s a jump with absolutely no curriculum prep.

This is one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen. I can imagine having this as a goal, and then starting to prep this year’s 4th graders to be ready in 2 years for 6th grade algebra. But to just spring it on kids and leave gaps?? It is so so weird.
I’m glad my oldest kids missed this nonsense, and I’m super hopeful my younger one is young enough that some of the gaps will be ironed out!

honestly, it's Algebra II I'm worried about in 8th. It gets much more complicated. Algebra I is not difficult for many kids to master, but Algebra II seems a big jump for middle school brains.

This reflects what I have looked into since the announcement. I have seen here and in real life parents worried about skipping pre-algebra, but when I searched online for what topics are considered pre-algebra to see what gaps I may need to fill in for my child, most of the lists look like the list of topics they have covered this year. I wouldn't be surprised if FCPS decides to rename it pre-algebra like they are for math 7.

Was a specific class called pre-algebra very common in the US? I took Alegebra 1 in 8th grade, which was considered "advanced" back in my day, but I don't recall seeing a pre-algebra class other than the one they put the kids in who weren't ready to take Algebra 1 in 9th grade.

I took algebra in 8th in FCPS in the early 90s and we had pre-algebra in 7th. It was definitely the pre-requisite for algebra. I have one kid who is in algebra in 7th, and one who took it in 8th. They have both done great, but the one who took it in 8th had a terrible 6th grade teacher and missed a ton of topics that she ended up learning in 7th. We don’t supplement, so those would have been things she wouldn’t have even known she should have learned, if that makes sense?

I worry this push will mean kids will miss topics and no one will know until they are struggling in alg II because the elementary teachers don’t seem to be held to the same standards
