Should we attend this birthday party?

Anonymous
DD (4) has had a cold for the past several days. We are on Day 5 since symptom onset, and symptoms seem to have peaked Friday-yesterday (Saturday). Her good friend’s birthday party is this afternoon. Should we attend or skip due to illness? DD is at her normal (high) energy level but has a stuffy nose and a cough. She isn’t sneezing today and no longer has a runny nose.

The party is a playground party, so everyone will be outdoors the entire time. Most of the kids who will be attending go to preschool together, and this cold seems to be going around their school. DD has not had a fever throughout the course of this illness. She’ll attend school tomorrow (and having her attend is completely in compliance with her school’s illness policy).

We kept DD home from gymnastics yesterday so that she could rest and to avoid spreading germs to others. However, she REALLY wants to attend the birthday party today. I’m inclined to let her go since her symptoms are improving, the party is outside, and all the kids will see each other at school tomorrow anyway. Just wanted a gut check on whether bringing her to the party sounds ok to others. (FWIW, I reached out to the host mom about this this morning, and she said DD absolutely should still attend.)

Yes, I would go. If 4 year olds missed events where they were feeling good but were getting over colds, they would never go to anything.

Ha until your last line about contacting the mom, was wondering if this was our party. (Had my DD's 4th bday party at the playground yesterday.)

I would have definitely encouraged you to still attend!

Yeah, for an outside party where she will be at school with the kids the next day, definitely go. They're not that contagious by Day 5 (cue the screaming people saying you can still spread illness with any little sniffle- nothing would be enough for them but total social isolation for weeks).

Yes if she was already at school with tgen, everyone is exposed

I hate parents like you. We don’t want your sick kids around.

Hope you're home-schooling your kids then.

Our rule is, as long as they don’t have a fever or something like pink-eye they are GTG. Both when we host or when we go somewhere.

If you aren’t sure just ask the host.

I hope your daughter attended ➕ had a great time!

No, and if you do, warn the other parents as it's crummy to risk infecting others. Your little cold is dangerous to someone like me. If your sick kid was going, mine would not.

You can and at a playground colds transfer from surfaces.
