The sign ups for next season are about to open and we’ve been questioning quality of coaching (or lack of) in our club.
Mostly looking in the area of GW Rec, Mount Vernon Rec, Franconia Rec and The StJames. Would like some honest opinions on clubs you love- coaches who actually see and notice individual swimmers. I see other team coaches pull out individual children and instruct them on specific things to improve, or showing specific moves on dry land. None of this is happening in our practices. Feels like a conveyor belt of back and forth swimming. What makes your club/coaches great? |
| With these parameters your options are NCAP Alexandria, Potomac Marlins, and St James. Not sure if you are with any of these clubs now but the age of your child may also be a factor with recommendations. |
|
What age group is of interest? NCAP at Franconia has some good coaches. I wouldn't bother with Marlins or St. James. If you can manage a longer drive, AAC would also be an option.
|
| OP here. 10 year old - I guess 9-10 age group. With frequent practices driving much farther would be a challenge possibly. |
You will not see a lot of individual work at AAC. |
A smaller club FXFX that host a number of meets and practices out of the St. James might be an option. They are pretty individualistic and not as ludicrously expensive as the Marlins. |
Fairfax Foxes -(FXFX) - they are a good small club. |
| If you're looking for more personalized attention and instruction on proper stroke technique, you may want to consider a smaller club. Would check out Trident and reach out to Coach Scott. We've had a great experience. He runs practices at both Mt Vernon and GW and supports several PVS meets throughout the season. |
| Curious what your current club is. We live in the same area and are thinking of doing club next year for our eight year old. |
| Second the advice on the smaller club if you want attention. |
| We live in that area and have been happy with Marlins at Mt. Vernon Rec. |
| For younger swimmers, highly recommend Trish Buswell and Hadley Rowland with NCAP at Franconia. Age group 1 on Mon/Wed at 5 pm. |
I second that, Trish is one of the best in the business for all age groups. Long term, NCAP will also have more access to meets and swim opportunities than other smaller clubs might not. |
Foxes is a great club, but I think the only group that is exclusively at STJ is Bronze, which may be a level too low for OP's child if they are already several years into club swimming. |
