Fall sports tryout dates?

Anonymous
I haven't seen MCPS announce the first day of fall sports tryouts. Is there any reason to think it would not be on Aug 12, which is the 'projected' date on this page?

That might be an official date but most programs will be meeting and conditioning starting the day after school ends

I give my players 5 missed days between the end of school and the beginning of the season. After those 5 days they drop on the depth chart and have a climb back into the lineup.

I allow the 5 days so you can go on a week vacation. Just don’t miss more than that

Wait until 4/30 for the BOE to approve any schedule changes to the 26-27 school year. Sounds like they will push up the start date earlier than expected.

Dates come from MPSSAA, not MCPS. The official first day for fall practices is August 12.

I appreciate the chart but I think it must be quite old-- it doesn't even have Flag Football or pickleball listed as sports.

Yes, we get it. Your sport is the most important thing in the world. So ridiculous.

Neither sport is played state wide yet.

Your kids can go play rec sports. HS sports require discipline and dedication. There should not be any handouts at this level. It's not my job to pad your kid's college application with athletics they don't deserve

So the first day of tryouts/season is set at the state level and not MCPS level? So that suggests it won't depend on next year's calendar? And probably won't be announced at the time of the new calendar, either?

How does a kid new to MCPS for HS find out about these workouts and practices? And you do these before you even tryout and know if you made the team?

I coach football. Pretty much everyone “makes it” as I don’t mind carrying a large roster filled with depth. I will take 45 kids on Varsity even though maybe 30 of them will actually play. Need kids for practices.

Is it the same for basketball? Girls?
How do we find out when the workouts are if not a current student? DD has a student but email isnt active as not a current student.

Are they usually during the day or in the evenings or does it vary school to school?

Girls basketball is a winter sport, so she should be a current student when practices start.

A lot of schools have some sort of sports night in the spring for incoming students to meet the coaches, so you can look for that.

DD can also look up the coach on the school’s website and reach out to find out how to best get info.
