Not sure where to find a job

Anonymous
I’m in my mid 40s and recently completed a BS in Computer Science. Nobody is hiring me. I’ve applied to lots of jobs and gotten very little response.

I live in a very nice neighborhood in Fairfax County. I really don’t want to leave

I’m not sure where to get a job. Should I apply to nursing homes? Working with old people, driving to appointments etc?

I thought with a CS degree people would be contacting me all the time about jobs but the only ones seem to be ones that require a clearance. I had a SCI but it was a long time ago.

Every restaurant in Fairfax is hiring. Check indeed.

What aspects of tech did you focus on previously? How long have you been out of a job?

You need some experience with AI, too.

There are tons of jobs in VA but it depends on your technical skills and salary requirements.

Have you had any traction at all with your applications? Are you getting interviews and not converting to jobs or are you not getting interviews at all? Depending on the answer, you will probably need to work on something. If you’re not getting any interviews, you need to think honestly about whether the roles you are applying to are suitable for you. If they genuinely are, maybe you need to work on your cv or do a better job tailoring it to the roles. If you are getting interviews but you don’t make it to the final round, then it may be your interview skills that need work.

Do you have a strong project portfolio where you can actually show or demo things that you’ve built with code? Do you have impact metrics in your CV (e.g. reduced the computation speed by X% for some kind of ETL process)?

Are you considering internships or just jobs? There are tons of internships @ Mitre. You might want to start there.

USAjobs.gov has multiple STEM job openings locally that include CS among other degrees.

https://www.nro.gov/Careers/job-listings/

Example that includes local openings with CS for some positions.

You "recently " earned your degree? From what school? All colleges have a career center/help with job placement. Didn't you take advantage of this? Depending on how recently you graduated, you can still contact them as an alumni . At the very least, you can have them review your resume, mock job interviews, job listing, etc.

Is this a real degree? Or on line?

You are in one of the worst, if not the worst, fields from a job market perspective right now. There have been massive amounts of layoffs in the programming area so you are going to have tons of competition and hiring has slowed dramatically for this field. Can you go back to your old field?

Why a CS degree and why spend all that time and $$$ on it being in your mid 40s??
