| What are those two programs? |
| Scholars is a step below Honors |
| Placement to either is pretty random—they try to keep a mix of majors, etc. |
+1 |
| What is the "cutoff" for Honors vs Scholars? |
Whatever they want it to be. |
| Are MCPS students who are accepted to UMD crazy to contemplate another school over UMd given how difficult it is to get into UMD from MCPS? |
Of course not! Other comparable state schools...IU, OSU, Wisconsin, Purdue often give talented students enough $$ to make the costs very close to UMD in-state. And there are many students accepted to Ivies, Duke, Georgetown, JHU, CMU, Wash U, etc. who prefer those options. |
From my kids’ school, it’s pretty predictable who gets in to which - honors kids have higher stats and more leadership. |

"Invitations to the Honors College are extended to new first-year students who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and promise. Students’ applications are carefully evaluated on the basis of academic achievement in high school, rigor of high school program, application essays, letters of recommendation, participation in extracurricular activities and standardized test scores.
Each year, approximately 1,050 freshmen are welcomed into this highly selective academic community..." "College Park Scholars is a two-year living–learning program for academically talented students. On average, about 75 students enroll in each Scholars program every year." 75*13=975 |
Was not true for my kids. UMD was at least 15K less a year. Even bigger difference for my kid in UMD honors + scholarship. The higher ranked the out of state flagship, less merit. |
| My high stats kid did not get into scholars or honors. She got into FIRE. Not sure what it is, but she passed. She got into several schools ranked higher than UMD and will be attending one of those. UMD was really a safety for her. |
Being an URM helps a lot for Honors. |
Yep. Like my unhooked UMC white kid from VA. |
