Looksmaxing (sp?) scale?? My ds told me about this

and that ‘all’ the kids use and know the terms on the scale including things like ‘LTN’ - low tier normal- Chadish etc. He says he was bothered that his friends said his gf was beneath him on this scale.

I had to hold back on my disgust and horror.

I have an older dc who is not perfect but didn’t seem to go through this astoundingly shallow phase.

Anyone else hear of this?

Ds just turned 18 btw.

It's gross but I don't think it's a real phase for teens, it's just a pop culture reference they are embracing and will discard. Like little kids saying 6-7. I don't think most teens are actually participating in "looksmaxxing".

The comment by his friends about his girlfriend is out of bounds though and it's good you son was horrified. Did he speak up? Teen boys are very stupid sometimes but behavior like that gets normalized and they become adults who talk that way about people. It's good your son is pushing back.

Is he going off to college? Perhaps he can make some better friends there.

I think these looksmaxxing threads on DCUM are being started by high-schoolers who love watching grownups go off on pop culture phenomena.

Yeah, I can’t quite believe this is the new thing everyone wants to pretend it is.

No, you didn't. You could have taken the opportunity to tell him how shallow and inappropriate that is.

Op. Eh? I’m not pretending anything. This is what dc told me. I had no idea. Whether it’s a big phenomenon across groups is not all that important to me, bc apparently my dc’s friend group is into it and it’s awful

This has been a thing with teens since I was a teen on the 80s, they just didn't call it "looks maxing" they called it "rating." Tens are vicious now and vicious then.

Apparently you know nothing about psychology, especially with teens

There has been a scale of 1-10 since forever. Blake Edwards wrote the movie "10" in 1979 where Dudley Moore chases out-of-his-league Bo Derek.

That's too bad. Do you think it's coming from a place of insecurity? When I hear about adult men doing it, that's what I think it is. Also maybe a control thing, the way eating disorders are often psychologically about trying to exert control over your body or life (or both). Have you considered sending him to a therapist?

And in 2002, "Swingers" was all about their elaborate rating system for women: only the top 1% of women come to their gene pool.

There’s all kids of maxxing, even “nonnamaxxing” (channeling an Italian grandmother) so it’s not just looks, per se. Started with Clavicular, I think.
Fun fact, the Grand Ayatollah Morteza Khomeini-Nassiri of Iran, watched 300 hours of Clavicular looksmaxxing content over 14 months prior to being killed. Pretty interesting.
