Credit Card Transaction Fees

Anonymous
Are people seeing more credit card transaction fees being passed on to the consumer by businesses? Normally this was part of the cost of business, but lately more restaurants and businesses are charging the consumer 3% if you opt to pay with a credit card. I don’t normally carry a lot of cash on me, but credit card fees are starting to add up.

Yes I'm seeing it more. I don't care at restaurants, but when I have a home repair that was $6000, I used a check.

My hair salon charges $3 to use any electronic or card transaction including debit.

Yup. Aftercare now passes it on. Some restaurants. Got got used to the fees being absorbed by business and no longer. It's frustrating but what it is.

Really? Even Zelle etc?

I pay my hair stylist with a check (she is a sole proprietor and she has very reasonable fees and does a nice job. Been with her 15 years.)

I grudgingly pay the fee with my dentist (who is loaded and could easily eat the fee.)

And those are the only places I’ve noticed. But I’d probably just not go places that charge a fee if I had another option. The above two businesses I don’t feel like having to switch.

I did an entire 6 figure kitchen renovation by checks because they wanted 3% for card and 1.5 for wire transfers. So I said ok what about a check and they said ok, probably not realizing I was going to pay every requisition by check.

I made a donation to a GoFundMe by check to avoid an 8% surcharge!

Isn't that a good thing? I'd rather be allowed to pay less by check than have them raise the price for everyone to subsume the fee.

Yep. Pay attention to suggested tips as well. Some small businesses have become extremely dishonest.

Checks are barbaric relics. This country is so primitive when it comes to payment systems. Everywhere else in the world now you can tap seemlessly and the costs to businesses are negligible.

I’m at Rehoboth and went in one of the nicer clothing stores, meaning nice quality sweatshirts etc, not the super cheap thin crap. They had a cash price of $40 but a higher price for using a credit card. So annoying.

Yes. The reason is there was a change in teh rules a few years ago, so merchants were allowed to impose a card surcharge. Used to be they could only offer a cash discount off listed price.

Went to dinner at a restaurant in Great Falls (the Italian place... Roberto's?) and ran up a bill of a few hundred. Between my father and I, we always carry a decent amount of cash, so we paid in cash to avoid the surcharge. Mostly to force them to deal with cash since they seem to be "encouraging" it by charging the surcharge on card. Now someone has to run hundreds of dollars up to the bank the next day, and hope the cahs doesnt disappear in the process.

I'm not too cool to pay by check if I can save a few bucks.

Right! Cash isn’t free to deal with. Brinks trucks aren’t cheap.

I like the credit card rewards!
