I’ve dealt with gerd for years. I’ve cut out carbonation, try to avoid eating late, avoid too much spice, cut out Indian and pizza which trigger it the most, limit to one cup of black coffee, and have lost some weight. There are no changes. I still get heartburn when stomach empty, or when I’ve eaten. On and off all day.
My gastro does a scope every two years and puts me on Prilosec each time, and it helps SO much but I seem unable to ever go off it!! I step down and sure enough am shortly back to gerd. I am worried about the dementia risks of Prilosec ibut I have no idea what else to do, I’m miserable if not on it taking a ton of tums that only partially help. Has one succeeded in battling gerd? Any tips or ideas? |
| For me it is all tied to stress. First time in got bad was in finals time of grad school. Flared up during all pregnancies. Under control last 15 years and then lots of family stress this fall and it came flaring back. Possible stress link? Could you also try less aggressive drugs like Prevacid or Tums? |

Have you tried safer alternatives, like famotidine?
That holds me over, except a couple of times a year when my GERD really flares up. Then I use a PPI (like Prilosec) , but when it calms down I switch back to famoditine. (My doctor came up with this approach). |

What??? |
| I was on Prilosec for 5 years straight! Tried to get off it several times and couldn't because of severe acid (felt like strep). I was able to go off it by adding a supplement called DGL, which coats the stomach in more mucous, for 1-2 weeks, and went off of that (bc I didn't want to replace one supplement for another). Boom, first time in 5 years I'm comfortable and off antacids. |
| I quit Prilosec a few years ago. It was the worst two- three months of my life. I had a severe rebound acid reflux. I couldn't eat anything without being in pain and lost 20 pounds in three months. I noticed that eating a low carb diet helped, so I eliminated almost all carbs, ate a lot of salmon and cooked vegetables. Things settled down in a about two-three months, and I was back to eating normally. I also reduced my caffeine intake, since caffeine was also affecting my acid reflux. I used to drink two cups of coffee in the morning and a caffenated drink in the afternoon. Now, I am down to one cup of a very diluted coffee in the morning. I do occasionally get acid reflux, which seems to be caused by caffeine. I go off coffee entirely for a few days to a week, and things return to normal. |
