Online Education for student with IEP - FCPS

Anonymous
Is there an online school option for a FCPS student with an IEP? We’re dealing with severe school refusal and homebound education is self paced with no teacher instruction. DC has an extensive IEP and self directed curriculum is not working (i.e., DC is failing all core classes). we’re dealing with severe school refusal. School team is being ambiguous about whether an online option with instructional support is available.

Not in FCPS.

I read that with Virtual Virginia, students taking online course continue to be enrolled in their school district. Is this not the case with FCPS?

They have options but they don't seem to want to provide, like the literal homebound teachers of the past. Edmentum is garbage, I've got a kid on it now.

Edmentum is unable to adjust for any 504 for us, which is ridiculous, when you realize that all homebound kids have health challenges of some sort.

One day I will hold everyone accountable for this debacle.

FCPS should be ashamed.

We were in a similar situation with mcps. Both mental health and physical health. Saving you some headaches hopefully…

We were on home bound until we ran out. We got zero from homebound. Ultimately, the fight got so expensive with advocates and attorneys (and stress) for a whole school year we just had to withdraw and file homeschool paperwork.

Chose a private online provider and n went under a homeschool umbrella so we don’t have to deal with the county.

It’s crap that public school can’t or won’t make reasonable adjustments especially in the age of tech.

But in the end you have to make the decision that works best for your family. Know that public school system won’t make it easy for you no matter what route you want to go.

There are plenty of online schools but not with FCPS. You can research private options and then pull from FCPS and get their diploma directly through the private school. We ended up doing that when we had enough with FCPS years ago. Several are accredited in VA.

Adding to my post above, we withdrew and used private virtual school as the reason.

These are the ones currently accepted by FCPS, if they ever want to transfer back. I went to the VCPE site and searched virtual.

To OP, if you are considering a full program at an online school, I would suggest having your kid try one course this summer to see how they do. You can fill out this form and get it pre approved to add to his transcript.

We’ve done that for all my kids, because they are often cheaper than FCPS summer school, even for those without SN who wanted to take a class to get ahead. https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/is158.pdf

And sorry for post 3 but for one kid we did tutoring with a virtual class. I saw you have an extensive IEP and need support. We were never able to receive homebound that was sufficient through FCPS.

Fusion Academy is another option, virtual or in person. But they are very, very expensive. They will provide a one on one class.
