I just finished a psychological thriller that completely got under my skin, and now I’m chasing that same feeling again. Highly recommend subject book. If you’re into that genre, of course. Devoured in a handful of days.
I’m looking for books that revolve around mind games, manipulation, and that slow, creeping sense of being watched or controlled. Stories where the protagonist is forced into a high-stakes psychological battle—especially ones that blur the line between hunter and hunted. Bonus points if it involves a mysterious antagonist who always seems one step ahead, and a plot that keeps tightening the screws until the very end. I love narratives that dig deep into the character’s psyche while maintaining relentless tension—where every decision matters and the stakes feel intensely personal. If you’ve read anything that left you feeling unsettled in the best way, I’d love to hear your recommendations. What should I pick up next? |
| Not exactly what you want but Eye of the Needle is amazing. |

Did you read Gone Girl?
If you're married, it definitely is creepy. |

If you are looking for literary suspense and something quite different than the usual psychological suspense novel consider::
The Magus by John Fowles From Goodreads: “At the center of The Magus is Nicholas Urfe, a young Englishman who accepts a teaching position on a remote Greek island, where he befriends a local millionaire. The friendship soon evolves into a deadly game, in which reality and fantasy are deliberately manipulated, and Nicholas finds that he must fight not only for his sanity but for his very survival.” https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16286.The_Magus |
| Shutter Island— haven’t read this yet but on my TBR. |
| Any other suggestions? |
| Have you read Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon? Both by Thomas Harris |
Hoping for something that’s not been turned into a movie |
I guess that rules out Patricia Highsmith then… |

How about Lucien: A Novel by JR Thornton
From the publisher: “A gifted yet financially disadvantaged artist falls victim to the manipulative control of his wealthy, enigmatic Harvard roommate in this incendiary novel from the author of Beautiful Country—a piercing exploration of class, ambition, identity, and the perilous cost of reinvention in the tradition of Patricia Highsmith and Donna Tartt.” Also as mentioned in the review above, have you read A Secret History |
