We are deciding between Truth and McKinley Tech for High School. Any families have recent experience with either High School?
Pros & Cons? Things you would have wanted to know in advance of going to either? |
|
Wow, though this was going to be some sort of expose of McKinley Tech's perfidious lies.
They really are quite different. I would go with Tech because you can likely switch to Truth if you need to. |
| A mom who's child goes to our elementary school teaches there. She is a great parent and I am sure is a good teacher. She said some kids there have a focus of getting a more technical degree ultimately, not a 4 year degree in a STEM field. However, the school is able to prepare both kinds of students. She acknowledged that it's not for everyone and the competition to get in is not as high as the other selective schools. Still, it's not an easy in; My neighbor's son tried for four years to get in but ultimately graduated from Coolidge instead. Eventually I would probably have my kid apply as one of the selective high schools. |
| These are 2 totally different schools. Your child should go visit both and choose which one they like best. |
| Tech 1000% |
| I think well of both schools and have toured both. It really depends on what your child wants. If they want sciences and a big setting with the various sports, band, etc., then Tech. If they want a small setting with lots of autonomy, Truth. Either way, it'll be ok! |
| I think you’d have to have a really unusual kid for Truth to be the better choice. |
| Is your kid already at Truth for middle school? What about each school made you list them? Or did you just make a lottery list out of all selective high schools and charters with decent HS’s? This info would help us know what info might be helpful. |
| OP Here: We are at Truth Middle now. Specifically looking for families who have direct experience with either high school. |
| My kid's best friend's sister graduated from McKinley and got a full-ride to George Mason for forensic science. Lots of former students attended. Did well post-graduation. Many are working chosen STEM fields. |
| I'm very interested to hear your thoughts on Truth as a high school, OP. Personally I'm not sure which option is better. |
| Op, if you're already at Truth you likely know as much as anyone about the HS. It's new and so far, high performers are choosing Truth for MS but leaving for HS. But the admin is strong, it's small and supportive, and seems like it could be a great fit for kids who don't want the application HSs or a larger public. |
I don’t have any real insight about high school. As a middle schooler, my kid has been a fairly high performer, but there is little interest from the school in providing additional challenging materials. He’s doing fine overall, but the the promise of customized education has not really been delivered on for those on the top end of the spectrum. |
If this is where you are with Truth, I really think you should switch to MT. They do some honors tracking and AP classes, and have other enrichment opportunities through academies and extracurriculars that a school as small as Truth just can’t offer. |
| Hello OP, I know your post is asking about high schools but you mentioned your kid is in middle school at Truth. How is your experience? Are you guys happy with the school? We just got a seat and would love to hear thoughts. Thank you so much! |
