Potty training troubles

Anonymous
Trying to potty train my 4-year-old with Down syndrome. We are on day 5 of the no-pants method, and it’s just not clicking at all. I’m thinking we need a new strategy. What worked for your intellectually disabled or neurodivergent kid? How old were they and how long did it take?

Put in training underwear and take to the bathroom upon wake up, before bed and every hour. Bribe with iPad on toilet. Took a long time, many months. I don’t think they connected the feeling to going.

My dc is nd, but not id (not sure if that matters as far at potty training, have a few friends dcs with id who trained earlier than my kid). They did not train until age 4.5. I started trying at 2!

Tried everything. The no-pants was not for them at all-that was the worst (I'm assuming for sensory reasons). I finally got to the point where I just used pullups and encouraged potty time, but didn't give ipad or treats. One night after their bath, as I tried to put the pullup on, dc literally kicked it out of my hands, got up and ran to the potty! One week and maybe 2 accidents later, they were full time underwear.

All this to say-it seems like they get it when they get it, just keep encouraging but maybe not hardcore expectation (like, dont' expect it in 3 days or whatever) and it will eventually happen.

Good luck. We tried toilet training from age 3. Didn’t work until just after her 7th birthday.
And we tried alllllllll the methods. I don’t think there are any methods that will work if they’re just not ready .
