When does girl grow?

Anonymous
At our studio, I see some girls who are 5th grader or middle schoolers have no signs of puberty (on appearance like pimples or curvey), and I wonder if it is because they do gynmastic or ballet or dance. They are all on the skinny side, and most of them are tall over 5' at their age. Is that because they are skinny or is that because they are doing dance or gynmastic slow down the coming of puberty? I see some girls of certain races tend to develop earlier, and I also wonder if it is the gene.

Is there any sports or diets may prevent girls from going into puberty early? My puberty came early and I had menstrual period early at 5th grade. That was really annoying.

Depends on genetics to some extent. I started my period at age 10 (5th grade). Almost every other girl in my class and all my cousins started around 7th-8th grade. We are South Asian. It was annoying because I also didn’t grow much taller after that. I started wearing a bra at 12-13, I think.

It’s a general rule, but not always true that girls get their period when they hit around 100lbs. Girls who are skinny therefore tend to get their periods later.

For some girls with high activity levels (Olympic hopefuls, ballet school with 6+ hours a day of dance), athletics can delay it. Girls who don't eat enough might delay menstruation (doesn't matter if it's an eating disorder or environmental). There are genetic and environmental factors that can delay or hurry development. But overall? Normal range for menarche is 10-15, and breast development starts 2-3 years earlier, so 7-13 is normal. Height growth typically stops within 2 years of menarche, so 12-17 is typical for height increase stopping.

Look at the research again. BMI has a much, much higher relevance than general weight. Menarche is almost always delayed until BMI is at least 17% whereas plenty of girls who are tall hit 100 pounds without hitting 17% BMI, so don't start menarche until well over 100 pounds.

So basic

Some petite or below average girls never hit 100 lbs. And, some kids do not eat much at all at each meals.
