Has anyone been pulled over and given a summons for Virginia's Move Over Law (46.2.861.1A)? I passed a police officer on the shoulder and stayed in the right lane rather than move over. I truly didn't know that I was required to change lanes.
It will take some time for the ticket to be put into the court system. I don't know if I can waive the trial for this offense or how much the fine will be. I would be grateful for any information that's out there. And, yes, I understand why this law exists and I know I made a mistake. I am a careful driver, with no prior tickets and no accidents. I stay in the right lane because I'm the driver that isn't going fast enough for many. Please don't yell at me. |

Where did you learn how to drive?
Virginia? |
|
I did ask nicely for people to not yell at me.
It's done. I wish I could change it, but I can't. And there were a bunch of cars that flew past me in the right lane while the police car and I were sitting on the shoulder, so I'm not the only one. |
| And, no. Not Virginia. |
US? |
| Lesson learned. Pay your fine. Law enforcement officers die all the time because they are hit by cars. |
But everyone was doing it!!!! Grow up, OP. |
| Yes, in the US. And the bolded statement above is not intended as an excuse, but rather an acknowledgement that perhaps others are also unfamiliar with the law. |
+1 This law has been in effect regarding police cars for almost 25 years. If you can’t get over, slow way down. |
| You aren't the slowpoke in the left lane for long. Just move over. |
| It’s been a law for years. However, if you cannot safely move lanes, you slow down significantly. |
| It’s an expensive ticket. Cost my BIL $300 quite awhile ago. He was able to just pay it and not go to court. |

Just pay the ticket.
There’s no question here about your guilt - you admit you violated the law. You got caught, so pay up Move over or slow way down next time, and you won’t get ticketed again. |
