Are you paying sales tax on your gym membership?

I don't think I ever have and I don't on my current membership but I recently checked out a boutique place for fun and bought a couple of classes for thrills. I looked over the receipt and realized they charged me sales tax. I tried to investigate further but all the internet says is that it's complicated. This is in MD, btw. I will ask the next time I go to the boutique place but the receptionist doesn't seem to know much.
