A state department committee known as the Israel Leahy Vetting Forum has reviewed several allegations of Israeli human rights abuses and gave a recommendation to Blinken in December to disqualify US aid to several Israeli military units. Blinken is sitting on the recommendation and has done nothing.
The incidents under review mostly took place in the West Bank and occurred before Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel. They include reports of extrajudicial killings by the Israeli Border Police; an incident in which a battalion gagged, handcuffed and left an elderly Palestinian American man for dead; and an allegation that interrogators tortured and raped a teenager who had been accused of throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails. https://www.propublica.org/article/israel-gaza-blinken-leahy-sanctions-human-rights-violations |
What are you smoking? Issues and sectarian tensions have always been there. There are no innocent groups and the evil is very equally distributed. Some Jews, Muslims and Christians are good. Some are not. Most are just caught up in the flow. There can be no peace without justice - and that justice applies to everyone there. |
Wouldn’t it be interesting to know how many people are really on this thread? The same 5? For hundreds of pages? |
Jews and Muslims were living peacefully all over North Africa and the Middle East. When Europeans kicked Jews out during the Spanish inquisition, where did Jews go? To Muslim/Arab lands in North Africa. All that changed when Israel was created. |
Oh you can see the pro Israel posters are just a few. About 1/2 are trolls or bots. |
The various groups did not always get along, although most of their fights were internal. Ottoman rule ebbed and flower with their tolerance. While it was, on the whole, more tolerant than other places it did suffer from spasms of intolerance. It also wasn't exactly thriving economically. Heck, if there was one thing that could describe the pre-20th century Levant that thing would be population flight. |
Silver lining to this mess?
The far left has suddenly rediscovered a commitment to free speech on campus. 77% now support allowing speech, even if it's upsetting. Quite a change from prior polling results. ![]() https://www.jamesgmartin.center/2024/04/have-left-leaning-students-begun-supporting-free-speech/ |
But the right has never been about free speech. Wait till you see what happens to Israel when Trump is back. |
The only reason Israel does better is because of the US support. Israel could not make a go of it with the US economical support. There is nothing there to base an economy on. |
What do you think “happens to Israel when Trump is back”? I’m not sure and am super curious about the possibilities. |
There’s some stuff there, but not enough to finance all the weapons the occupation requires. |
The export arms to Azerbaijan so that Armenians civilians can be ethnically cleansed. It's a great business if you don't mind being responsible for a touch of evil |
Can’t have speech police without big government . Slash the Marxist blob. |
Sounds like Joe Biden isn’t the only person who thinks it’s 1982. |
Agree it’s way worse now. |
