Harvard legacy

Are there Harvard legacy applicants that do not get in? In our circle, every single Harvard legacy kid has been accepted - they were all qualified academically of course. Just wondering if dcurbanmom knows of Harvard legacy applicants that do not get in. (I'm curious as we have younger ones coming up in a few. years...)

I'm a Harvard Extension grad and both my kids got in to Harvard Extension.

As of 2019, 33% got in.

Yes, it happens even at our "feeder" private school, though it's less common in this environment. Happened this year - I doubt the kid(s) met the academic and extracurricular minimums.

Double legacy DD was deferred EA and WL/reject RD. 4.0/4.7/1530, published research, leadership, national awards. Oh well.

Saw it happen. The great kids had other excellent admits.

Saw Yale legacies waitlisted and then admitted after accepting at other colleges. Some went, some stayed with the earlier offer.

My good friend had a top academic son at a top boston private - 1580 first try SAT no prep, great grades and AP scores, finished BC calc as a junior, etc. He didnt get into Harvard. Ended up at a T10 university and was happy.

Can definitely affirm that Yale legacies often don't get in. Don't have experience with Harvard but I cannot imagine they all get in either.

DS is. Almost perfect SAT, perfect GPA, highest rigor, relevant ECs/internships and passion projects but no major research nor international competition. I thought his essays were good and recs were likely good as well.

Deferred, and it's fine.

Yes, over two-thirds of Harvard legacies are denied admission.

Yes, I know two this year who are going to Vassar and Emory. Both deferred and made alternative plans for ED2.

The new strategy from our private is for the Yale grad parent to conveniently become a Yale faculty 1-4 years before their kid applies REA...

3/3 faculty or faculty + legacy kids were admitted in the last 3 years. Shrug
