| 10 year old DD figured out that her school had an early release day due to weather concerns, including POSSIBLE tornado-related matters. This isn’t good for her to be aware of, simply because she is really afraid of tornadoes lately. She saw “The Wizard of Oz” last month and I don’t know if she’s really deduced that it’s not a documentary quite yet! lol. But I do feel bad for my child, she’s so scared of a tornado coming. How do I reassure her? This is kinda time sensitive, so PLEASE respond. |
| Can you blame her? |
| why are you saying "lol" to your daughter being afraid. go comfort her |
| good time to go over emergency procedures, preparedness, disaster response. |
+1 |
For being a tween that thinks Wizard of Oz is a documentary? |
I fear your daughter is a bit "behind" |
|
I am also terrified. I'm from CA, I know as much as a 10 yo when it comes to what to do in a tornado. Comfort her, tell her you'll keep her safe and explain that your house has a foundation and will not be ripped away into the sky.

| Might I recommend The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee? Fun musical that references tornadoes. Perhaps not age appropriate, but oh well. Tell her to hold on to her stockings! |
Meditate. Deep breaths. Listen to soothing music (might I suggest a singer who goes by the name of Clairo?). |
I . . . what?? |
Honey, was it enough? Is it ever enough? Love Clairo! Comfort you’re child. |
| I’m 49 and terrified of tornado. We do not have the sirens, basements (for the most parts) but you do what you can OP |
This. I think knowing her fear is valid, there are things you can do to stay safe and deal with the aftermath, and she can learn and practice those things might help. |
