LCPS early release tomorrow

What are we thinking? Honestly I'm surprised they haven't announced anything yet

They just announced they are going to wait and see.

Which is going to make it a real headache for school staff. I've lived through day-of early release calls in LCPS (basically 20 years ago) and it always ended up with parents coming well AFTER the regular release time. Not giving parents notice to prepare is going to make it a mess.

+1 literally every other school district has made up their mind by now

They will decide to release early if they don’t overreact and decide to close. I think that’s why they haven’t announced. Not because they actually think a full day of school will happen.

Sure, I think so too, although perhaps also they are hedging for the forecast to tighten up to see if it will be necessary. But not calling it early leaves parents scrambling to arrange pickups and childcare for ES. I hope if they do early release that they call it before school starts so parents can have few hours to make arrangements with their bosses and backup childcare.

“Monitoring throughout the day” is the worst possible approach. That means schools have to make emergency last minute dismissals if it gets bad? Kids and parents can’t even make a plan for leaving early now because it’s wait and see . I’m an LCPS teacher and I might just let my kids stay home because I’m not dealing with the stress of them walking home from the bus in a storm or trying to get to them for pickup at the drop of a hat. Every other district around us is doing early release, why does LCPS think we will be the exception to weather?

Falls Church is doing the same. They are very small but it’s still a terrible call. As of now, students will be leaving on time and staff will be driving home at the regular time.

Now they’ve announced early release. ACPS and LCPS are the only exceptions now

And now ACPS is on early release too. It’s just LCPS

Sounds like LCPS is the only sane ones. The panic is insane.

We are closely monitoring the severe weather forecast for our area later today. As you may know, weather systems like this can change quickly in timing and intensity, making it challenging to predict exactly when the worst conditions will arrive.

At this time, we are NOT planning an early dismissal; however, we are canceling all after- school activities and programming across campuses and administrative offices. Current forecasts suggest that the strongest conditions could occur during the window when buses would be transporting students home if we dismissed early. Out of an abundance of caution, we do not want to risk buses and student drivers being on the roads during potentially hazardous weather.

We are staying in regular contact with local emergency management and reviewing the latest forecasts throughout the day.

If conditions were to become unsafe at the end of the school day, we will hold students at school until it is safe to release them. We will provide families with updates if this occurs. Our priority is always the safety of our students and staff, and we would rather delay dismissal than send buses and families into dangerous conditions.

We will continue to keep you updated throughout the day if anything changes.

Thank you for your understanding and partnership as we work to keep our students and staff safe.To learn more about how we make weather-related decisions, please visit the Inclement Weather webpage.

Kids are “sheltering in place” and parents are told not to get their kid. Right.
