What to do/not to do_new to high school

Anonymous
Our son is starting Yorktown in the fall. I am new to the U.S. high school system so please be kind. We have registered already. What is next? He has been in a private school. Grades are good. Do we meet with a counselor to pick the courses? How to take honors classes? What is the best way to strengthen math skills during summer? Any good programs in the area that are not very expensive? RSM didn’t work for him. How to get on a golf team? What to expect in general? What about volunteering? Is it required?

I'd reach out to the school registrar at Yorktown to ask about classes & make sure he is placed in the correct math level as well as correct foreign language level. When we moved to Arlington from overseas the registrar at our high school was the person who got our kid into the classes. You will have choices for intensified or AP classes. Yorktown PTSA will be a good connection for you. Volunteering is not required but always nice to do, particularly if he plays a sport, Boosters Clubs always like help with match days. Good luck!

Golf like many fall sports begin during summer vacation, so enquire with the school and/or coaches prior to then for any requirements.

Schedule your son for a physical exam sometime between 5/01 and 8/01 to be able to participate in fall sports. Get on the mailing list for school so you get notice of sports tryout dates. They are in the final stages of selecting courses for next year so call as soon as you can. Oh, and join the pta in the fall and listen in on the zoom meetings, lots of good information and dr Clark the principal always speaks.

As the parent of a yorktown junior, welcome!
