Designer, expensive clothes, jewelry wiwat colleges…

Wow, I have seen some of the sorority college tiktoks and shows- girls showing off and wearing their expensive designer clothes, shoes, bags, and jewelry. I’m aghast. Did your kid do this?

My husband has always spoiled my DD. I do not want her bringing fancy items to college, it’s enough they are wearing alo and Lululemon wear. DD’s collection of jewelry (she wears a lot of bracelets and necklaces), sneakers, fancy sandals, bags and belts. She wants to bring some next year- “some” still constitutes a lot.

My college wear in my days was wayyyy channeled down. What did your kid bring? Experience with theft? I’m still getting over hearing my neighbor’s daughter getting ruffied at a University’s bar so this sidebar is another worry.

Teach her street smarts but let her bring stuff. She can always bring some items back home during Thanksgiving.

Why the obsession on your end with labels?

My DD is bringing all the things she normally wears. She doesn’t have a lot of high end jewelry so not really a concern. She has expensive clothes and shoes that she saved up for or got as gifts but normal day to day wear is regular stuff from the mall. My freshman roommate was a druggie and stole everything of mine that was not tied down even if worth very little. Give her a small lockbox if you are worried. Pay less attention to tik tok trends and teach your DD the value of money.

you bought her all the brands and expensive stuff but are complaining that other college students are wearing designer duds? Hypocrite much?

Do you know what dupes and knockoffs are?

There were some famous sister on tiktok, the Darnells, who were exposed as having all fakes.

Tik tok is not a documentary.

I think there is a lot of dissonance here.

Tik Tok is not real life. Tell your kid not to compare themselves to anyone especially within the fake world of social media. That's my advice.

You need to watch Destinee’s richtok rundowns and then shop her Amazon page.

To answer your question, DD has one nice necklace that she got for graduation, one mid tier bag, and a lot of LLL. She buys dresses on the cheap prom dress sites. But she’s at a second tier school. If she were at a top southern school, you gotta pay to play in sorority life. You should know that before attending.

1) Things change, and 2) she isn't you.

Let her take whatever she wants, whatever she usually wears. Conversations about safety in bars/ at parties and around men in the world in general is a separate conversation, as is keeping your more expensive stuff safe from theft.
