Magruder - Protest Last Period Today?

Anonymous
My husband drove by Magruder around 2:15 and saw a whole bunch of students outside. My son is a junior at the school and he just got home so we asked him what was going on since it was too early for them to be out for the buses. He said it was some sort of protest about the government - he doesn't really pay close attention because he doesn't participate.

I am not against students having the right to protest, but I DO have a problem with them doing protests on school time and that administration seems to just let it happen. I don't know if they okayed this or if they just gave up because they couldn't stop it. All I know is that it's a distraction for everyone. He said it was probably about 85% of the school and really not even half of them really cared about the topic but that they were getting out of class.

Students have First Amendment rights. They're allowed to organize protests. There is precedent for this within the courts.

There have been other threads on this forum about this topic already. Too lazy to dig them up right now.

Students can have First Amendment rights on their time, not on school time when it affects other students' learning.

Could you imagine if people just walked out of their job to protest things like ICE or this thing or that thing? Is that their First Amendment right? Yes....but they could easily get fired. You can't fire a student though.

That's nice that you feel that way. That's not what the courts and law says.

That's literally how you bring about change. I'm all for a walk-out strike to protest ICE.

I don't know about Magruder. I think there was an anti_ICE protest to day at lunch at Churchill.

Today was apparently a nationwide (or maybe a DC area thing) planned protest day. Not sure where it was announced though.

A few Northwood and Walter Johnson students walked out and met up halfway. Very cool to see these two schools in solidarity.
