How do you find a good independent structural engineer

That’s the question

Good question, it’s like following the yellow brick road in search of the wizard of oz…if you have a library account, you can access a directory database like Data Axle through public library in MD. This will allow you to use industry codes (NAICS, SIC) to filter on structural engineering, then usually independent engineers have home based businesses, you filter on that as well…Now to determine if they are good you could use their annual revenue as an indicator and other factors like no delinquent cases in case search, business is registered and in good standing, they are licensed, etc. You can also use AI to help you find/verify info and it will drill down choices based on your specific needs and give advice on questions to ask and different considerations. There are also industry association directories to google and find local professionals. Follow the, follow the, follow the…follow the yellow brick road. Good luck!

My architect recommended several and I chose based on bids. Where are you located? I can recommend the one I used in MoCo.

For a new design or renovation, or for analysis of an existing structure?

Most "Professional Engineering" (PE) firms will have civil/structural, mechanical, and electrical engineers. Important that they have a PE license in your state.

Yes to that point, if you look them up in these licensing databases specific to your state you will find a ton. I am in MD and I am also searching for an engineer who will be required for a project. It’s tedious as hell, but I am just noticing how many engineers are licensed in MD but live elsewhere in the DMV and beyond. But if you are desperate, like me, you will keep searching until you find one. IME, that 1 or 2 recommendations you may get doesn’t necessarily result in finding who you need.
