Fencing or karate

I have a 7 year old girl & a 10 year old boy. Both are not that body coordinated or sporty, but they have been doing recreational sports all year since age 5 all seasons. The girl has done gynmastic, ballet, basketball & rock climbing. The boy has done kayaking, basketball, soccer and rock climbing. They both have never tried fencing or karate. Is 7 year old too young to try for fencing? Do girl do fencing? Is 10 year old too old to try for karate? I need help to decide for the spring sign up on new sport.

Girls absolutely do fencing! My daughter loves it. It's a great sport that way, in the sense that speed and strategy are more important than pure strength. And 7 is not too young for fencing in general; if the class allows it, it's fine.

Let them try both then decide. Both of my DCs ( a girl and a boy) tried and liked fencing, but DD just couldn’t manage the weight of the fencing sword due to weak wrists.

Kids of all ages, and adults, start martial arts all the time. 10 is not too old

Is that fencing sword heavy? How much weight are we talking about with the protection suit, helmet, and sword ? My DD is light weight.

I've seen teeny little kids fencing. The weapon weight depends on the weapon--foil is the lightest, but our club starts kids with epee, which is a little heavier, but a child's epee is maybe a pound? The suit isn't that heavy -- it's like very thick cotton or polyblend. The helmet is mostly mesh. None of the kids seemed to have an issue with any of it. The biggest thing is that you get pretty sweaty, so light layers underneath are key.
