Hi, I am currently undergoing cancer treatment. I have never seen a therapist before but am thinking it might be beneficial to talk to someone. I have a good prognosis but also have young kids and it has been a lot to deal with. I recently learned there is a specialty therapy focused on people going through cancer and am wondering if anyone has recommendations for a psychologist/therapist in the DMV who specializes in this? I'm being treated at hopkins but am open to private practice or another hospital system for this.
Yes. Chris Santangelo in Dupont Circle. He is a psychiatrist and professor of medicine at Georgetown. He has historically worked with the various cancer specialties at Georgetown and I was a patient. Very knowledgable and one of the nicest guys I have ever met.
I’m sorry that you find yourself in this spot. Even when you don’t fear for your survival or long-term quality of life, cancer treatment is a lot. Sibley (part of the JH system) has a resource page that includes support groups and social work: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/kimmel-cancer-center/washington-dc/cancer-care-at-sibley-memorial-hospital/patient-family. Check in with your providers as well; they may have a good referral or two for you.
Also try support group.

My cancer center had therapists on site and their services were free to cancer patients and their families. They were excellent.
