A person I don't know well contacted me by phone out of the blue. This was not, for example, a friend from college or a friend from years ago. This was someone I spoke to on the phone one time as a networking call. We both have similar businesses. We had a nice chat but have not spoken since...
Out of the blue, they called me. They said their first name only and I figured it was spam so I hung up. I do not even have this person as a contact in my phone, so that is why their full name did not show up when they called. They sent texts asking if I am ok and think they must either have dementia or their phone was stolen. I do not post about my business on social media so it's not like the read that anything bad happened to me. There is no reason they should be asking if I am ok. They keep using my name, which feels off. So, I lean toward the phone being stolen. Thoughts? |

Not enough info to know.
Could even be someone spoofing a number in a phishing/scam attempt. If you’re really curious, call back. Say something like, “I think I mistakenly hung up on you the other day. I wasn’t expecting to hear from you. What’s going on?” |

Dementia? Why would it be dementia? Is this person 85 or something?
Did it sound like them? Even if it did, could be spoofing with an AI fake voice. Seems more likely than "dementia," but still not terribly likely. Occam's razor says it was probably the actual person, for some reason other than dementia. But, yeah, just call back and see what happens. Or text. |
| They have your name or number mixed up and think they’re contacting someone else. |
| How would we know? |
|
Spam or a mix up.
|
This is definitely possible |
| Why would you jump to dementia here? Could be anything, they could be trying to network again, sell you on an MLM, have some legitimate business interests have mixed up contacts, etc etc. |
| Maybe the dementia candidate is you, OP. |
+1 good lord how do some people function? |
|
They called, you said hello, they said their name and you hung up.
They might wonder if you are ok or had YOUR phone stolen. |
This is what I thought at first. I texted them to say they might have me confused with someone and they said, “Oh!” But did not 100% confirm. Very weird. Maybe they put my name in their phone and chose the wrong “Sam.” |
| Sounds like spam. It’s not the person you knew. I’d report as spam and block. |
