Anyone have experience traveling through terminal 3 at Heathrow airport. We have a connecting flight that arrives and leaves from Terminal 3.
Do we have to go through security? If so, how backed up is security usually? Is it easy to get from one gate to the next? |
| Very crowded, long lines, chaotic crowds. Two rounds of security for connecting flights. Very strict on liquids. Easy? no |
| Third circle of Hell. |
Gluttony is being recklessly charitable. |
| It really can be the 3rd circle of hell depending on what time of day you arrive. Yes you will have to go through security again even if staying within terminal 3. You will have to have ALL liquids in their clear baggies. They will find your lip balm in your purse. If I am connecting through Heathrow I always check my bag to make my life easier. |
As of early 2026, Heathrow Terminal 3 has fully installed advanced CT security scanners. Passengers can keep liquids (up to 2 liters) and large electronics (laptops/tablets) inside their bags. The new technology removes the need for plastic bags, significantly reducing security wait times and streamlining the screening process |
| Maybe I missed when they introduced it but last month they were still having everyone use their bags. |
+10. Allow extra time for unplanned delays. |
| which airlines? just curious |
Virgin Atlantic |
https://www.heathrow.com/at-the-airport/security-and-baggage They have been testing it in T2 (United and others) since last May at least, but it wasn't in T5 (BA) in July. It is supposed to be in the whole airport now. It was in T2 last month for sure. |
We didn’t have a connection but we arrived in T3 on Virgin last summer and had zero issues whatsoever. Breezed through immigration as a US citizen. |

I'm not adding anything to the discussion, but f**k Heathrow. Doesn't seem to matter how long my layover is, somehow I'm always stressing out in line, running to the gate trying to make my connecting flight.
(By 'always' I mean twice. Still, they were both awful experiences.) |
| I just did this last week and it was better than it used to be, but I'd still make sure you have plenty of time (especially traveling with kids). I didn't have to have liquids in a bag. |
| Is an ETA mandatory for passengers transiting through the same terminal at Heathrow? |
