Cost of EV charging in VA

If you have an EV in Virginia, what does it cost to charge it? Did you need to install a special charger at home?

The Dominion website has like 16 different rates, so I'm confused.

We have had some type of an EV since 2016. We have had an EV and a plug in hybrid since 2019. We didn’t have to install a special EVSE (“charger”), but we did. We usually have one plugged in to that 240 unit and the other a regular 120 outlet.

We haven’t noticed much of a change in our bill, but it’s also not something we really track.

I live in NoVa and have a ChargePoint EV charger in my home for a Polestar 2. On average, I pay about $19 to add 438 miles per month. This is mostly commuting to and from work. This works out to $.04 per mile. I have my charger programmed to charge between midnight - 5 AM to avoid peak rates from Dominion.

DC fast charging is more expensive and not included above. I only DC Fast charge during road trips.
