My 16 year old daughter is going on. a 9 day (plus 1 overnight flight) trip to southern Europe with her high school over spring break. She needs to pack everything in a rolling carryon and backpack.
Any tips on clothes a teen might like that pack small and a capsule wardrobe? She is petite - like 5/3" and a size 0. I was thinking - 2 pairs jeans - 2 pairs of some kind of flowy pants that pack small - Short sleeve t shirts - cardigan for layering - 1 dress - Maybe a jean skirt or one pair of shorts - Light sweater / long sleeve shirt - Rain coat She leans towards wide leg sweatpants and sweatshirts which are going to take up too much room. Weather looks to be in the 60s for the highs for most of the trip. She teens to like Aerie but some of it seems too much like pajamas. |
| Flowy wide leg pants and a maxi dress are your friends. You need to pack shorts, sandals, sneakers, bathing suit, sunglasses, hat. A couple of tanks and a cardigan, one hoody. She wears the bulkiest items on the plane. |
| This list looks good- I would pack 2-3 cardigans (or 2 cardigans and a sweatshirt, 1 of which can be worn on the plane). For 9 days with highs in the 60s, she will likely wear those every day, for at least part of the day. |
| I would do 1 pair of jeans and maybe add one maxi dress. Things are a little dressier there. |
It's called packing for vacation. It's not a capsule wardrobe.
Wear the jeans, t-shirt, and sweater on the plane. There's a reddit group for traveling with one bag if you can't picture how little space you have for an international carry on: https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag |
| Just btw, you better start with what she actually wears, and purge and adjust from there. On a trip, you do not want one more thing that brings on complaints from a preteen/teen. |
Haha this is a fair point. |
| Why isn’t she doing this herself? |
| This sounds like a summer wardrobe and highs are going to be 60s. What are the lows? One light cardigan and light sweater or long sleeved shirt will not be warm enough for the nights. Shorts are probably unnecessary. 4 pairs of pants is too many. She should at least wear the sweatpants and hoodie on the plane, if they are warm and what she wants. |
Agreed. One pair jeans One pair flowy black pants One dress or skirt Rain coat Layering tops: tanks, tees, blouses, sweaters PJs - Hoodie Sneakers Nice waterproof boots |
I doubt most American teens have packed for a 9 day trip to Europe. Who cares if the parents want to help their kid be prepared so they can have a comfortable trip? That seems normal to me. |
| Where in Europe? Most Europeans don’t wear shorts, so may want to swap for another skirt or dress. I’d add a light scarf that matches all the outfits for some added warmth if needed. |

I've done a lot of one bag travel and my best piece of advice is to only pack things she has tried and tested at home. Do not send her with new clothes, new shoes, or a brand new bag.
You don't want to find out on day two of the trip that the new sneakers cause blisters or squeak embarrassingly on slick museum floors. Ditto for packing only one dress and finding out it shows terrible sweat stains. |
| I would not take jeans at all. They are heavy and bulky, and if they need to be washed they take a loooong time to dry. |
