Is there a way to calculate SAS directly from raw scores? I assume the answer is no because I've read somewhere different questions on the test have different weight, but wanted to ask in case someone has more information.
DC scored: 47/54 on verbal (97%) 48/50 on quantitative (99%) 45/52 on nonverbal (98%) VQN 99% Would love to know the SAS and wish the school disclosed it... |

OP here. Found this information in the official Cogat documentation. LCPS must be doing it by the book:
CogAT is not an IQ test. Intelligence tests differ from CogAT in two critical ways: 1) intelligence tests sample a broad range of abilities in addition to the reasoning abilities that CogAT measures and 2) intelligence tests are normed on the entire population whereas CogAT is normed on that subset of students who attend school and can take a group-administered test. Because of the potential confusion with IQ tests, score reports shared with parents should give national (and perhaps local) percentile ranks—not standard age scores. |

What is your goal? Are you trying to figure out IQ?
I have a special needs child who has taken an IQ test. As the official statements say, Cogat is limited. IQ tests cover a broader range of skills in each subject area. Cogat is more like a proxy. Your child’s lowest score is in verbal. The verbal section of Cogat largely tests categorizing skills whereas IQ tests tests for a broader range of verbal skills. It's possible that your child would score higher or lower for verbal if tested on an actual IQ test. If you want more insight on your child’s actual IQ, you can get your child tested fairly easily. There are many providers in the DMV. But your child did well on Cogat, and I'm guessing you already know that your child is bright. So, in the absence of special needs, I don't know what more an exact score would give you. It sounds like you have a smart child, and unless you need to prove that for a gifted camp or private school, it's probably unnecessary. |
My goal was to figure out the SAS because I see it being discussed here as one of the indicators of acceptance into AAP. I was trying to figure out if we are talking about lower 130s vs. higher 130s or lower 140s in my child's case. The school will also consider third grade MAP (he scores in 99%) and work samples. |
| LCPS does not have AAP |
| This forum is for FCPS AAP. Are you trying to move from LCPS to FCPS and apply for AAP? If you do move you can request an ability test (FCPS uses NGAT now instead of Cogat) as a new student to the district. |
Primarily for discussion of Fairfax County's Advanced Academic Programs, but open for discussion of AAP and similar programs elsewhere as well. LCPS has its own program called FUSION. This is the program I'm interested in, but since there isn't much discussion about LCPS specifically, I lurk on this one. |
| FUSION will have different entrance requirements so comparing to AAP is not helpful for you. |
| OP here. If someone's child had similar raw scores this year, I would appreciate hearing what their SAS was. Thank you! |
| Writing to add: mine is 7 years 10 months old since it matters to SAS. |
| Ask ChatGPT |
| Ask your child’s search teacher. I asked and was told my child’s sas for all three sections and the composite. |
Thank you! |
