Walt Whitman Leadership Academy program

Anonymous
My DD has been offered a spot in this program. I would love to hear about the experiences of parents whose children have participated in this program. How has the program been overall? Were your children able to make friends and settle in easily, especially since students come from different high schools? Thanks

Congrats! Can you share what her waitlist number was? Trying to get a sense of movement. My DD is also on the waitlist.

Thank you. I don’t remember the exact number . But it was in 40’s. Do you know about the program ? We are kind of not sure about the decision . I would appreciate if you know anything about the program. Thanks again

Hello all …I thought I would ask again to hear from parents whose children are in the program or who know about it.
How has your experience been with the LASJ program at Whitman? Do students generally like it? Are they able to balance it well with other interests such as STEM, sports, and extracurricular activities? I appreciate any feedback or inputs.Thank you.

I have generally heard good things about the program, but not specifics. Whether it's a good fit for your kid probably depends on whether they are interested in the social justice courses, as that will substantially limit the electives they can take. Is there an option for your child to meet with the program coordinator and do a tour? that might be helpful. I'm surprised people here have not answered.

The coordinator just responded but unfortunately my DD can’t be able to go in person tomorrow. I asked if we could at-least meet with her and still awaiting an answer . We are worried about the new environment and whether Whitman will be a good fit also. Any transition in teen age years can be difficult right ? Our DD is kind of not able to make the decision she likes the program but she is also interested in STEM. And she does not want to leave her friends too…

By when do you have to decide? Can you at least get a call in with the coordinator before the deadline? Maybe the coordinator would let your DD talk to a current student? Good luck!

Isn't this one of the HS programs that has no transportation options? Are you ok arranging transportation for your kid daily (presumably you are living close to the Walt Whitman border so that may help with your kid's integration into the school).

Correct, no transportation.

OP what did your kid decide?

Yes Transportation is the problem. It’s a 20 minutes drive for us .

Are you a current family? Do you have feedback on the program?

Sorry we are not in the program…. we also got an invitation for the program . But we decided not to attend due to transportation.

What is the future of it under the new magnet plan? Is there any rideon bus available?

What is your home school? That should help you decide whether to take it or not
