| Random quest. Have you ever stayed somewhere that was far nicer than you imagined for what you paid? A place, town, or city you visited or a hotel you stayed at? |
| Indian luxury hotels (specifically the Taj and Oberoi chains) are absolutely amazing and they are relatively cheap, for what you get, in USD. The most luxurious and beautiful hotel I’ve ever stayed at was a Taj in Jaipur. It cost $300/night. |
| Several places in Central & South America…beautiful locations, great food, fun activiities and special touches. Ex: One place in the jungle lit luminarias every night on the property. It was practical so people could walk back to their rooms, but also beautuful. Another place mixed the best cocktails I’ve ever had in my life (this ia 17 years ago) and they were like $4 each even though all supplues had to be canoed and then hiked to the hotel. |
| The Sofitel in Baru Colombia was under $225/night and felt very special being on an island in a luxurious setting |

This usually tends to happen in locales with very light labor-protection laws and extremely low pay.
So... hope you can live with that. |
| India. India is the answer. |
| Grand Hyatt Beijing. Great Club Floor lounge with extensive hot and cold buffet breakfast, cocktail hour that was my dinner when DH had meetings. Including grilled to order lamb chops. I think the room (nice but not luxury) was cheap. |
As expected every reply includes locations with egregious wealth discrepancies / wealth inequality |

When I went to Costa Rica for a week, we were staying at the Costa Rica Marriott in San Jose (city center) for one night after arriving before we went on our nicer resort for the rest of the trip.
The property is a former coffee plantation and is totally lush and gorgeous. I did not expect it to be much because it is not a resort or not one of the glamorous places that people talk about, but it was a beautiful property and we did not pay more than $150/night for that hotel. |
| Four Seasons Seoul. I believe it was in the high 300s or low 400s per night. It's nicer than any place I've ever stayed at in my life. Felt like a $2,000/night hotel. |
It often happens in towns not called London, New York, Tokyo or Paris. We stayed in the best room of a five star B&B in the Dorset countryside for less than a cramped double in an ordinary chain hotel in London. |

Many locations in a lower standard of living v US can be amazing. Anywhere in nature will be beautiful.
It's all relative- go where there's money, the best things will be $$$. Go where there's nothing, a lot of beauty will be free. I went to China years ago and fell asleep at the Mandarin Oriental HK during my spa appt. It was the most amazing thing I ever experienced at $500USD. LOL. But it's the quality over the $$$. You really have to do your research to find quality these days is the thing... |
| Pretty much everywhere I stayed in Thailand. The quality of service and hotel infrastructure and food was so high. i paid 100$/night for a Marriott right on the beach in Phuket (that included the nicest hotel breakfast I've ever had in my life), and it was fabulous |
| Anacapri in Italy. |
