Madeira vs. Holton

Any families have kids at both schools who can weigh in with meaningful comparisons?

I think it's rare for parents to have kids at both. They usually pick one or the other or transfer between.

Madeira has boarding + Holton doesn't. It would be isolating for a kid to be a non-profit boarder at Madeira.

This is 100% not true. I have a senior day student at Madeira. She has tons of friends who are boarders and tons of friends who are not. (Not sure what you mean by non-profit boarder).

Fair enough, but there are quite a few families who have sent daughters to Madeira after being at Holton, and their opinions are what I'm looking for.

Same, my DD was a day student. About 50% of the class are day students and some of the boarders are local. DD had plenty of friends in both categories. DD often stayed after sports practice for dinner and study hall. Many day girls stayed for dinner so there was plenty of time for socializing with boarding friends after school.

Maybe ask Madeira admissions for the names of a couple of families you can talk to that fit that profile as your DD makes her decision. There weren't any Holton girls in my DDs class but that was a few years ago so maybe more make that move now. The local girls mostly came from K-8s and public school, and a few coed K-12's including GDS, Potomac, Flint Hill, etc.

Comments from people who have no idea what they are talking about are always so strange. (not to mention the "non-profit"???)

I had a niece that transferred. Madeira is less socially cut throat. Not as cliquey. Good academics at both but you’ll find Holton a little more traditional feeling - they do a lot with Landon. Uniforms. More posturing in the parent body. And the boarding does change things at Madeira. More diversity of thought and experience.

Also no lower school so everyone starts in 9th which is different.

DD got into both. They have pretty different vibes. Your kid will know after doing shadow days which one works best for her.

What were your daughter's impressions of each? Curious about the different vibes she got.

Each child is different. I’m not going to promote one school over the other based on my thirteen year old daughter’s impressions.

I liked both of the schools and their girls.

My daughter is at Holton, and one of her classmates came from Madeira in 9th or 10th grade. Felt that Holton was a better fit academically.

Couldn't have been 9th. Madeira is HS only.
