Any advice for growing a fig tree in NOVA? I have a south facing sunny spot to plant it, but I am worried about the clay content in our soil. It is currently in a pot, but grown from a clipping of a fig tree from my childhood home (which in turn supposedly came from Italy in my grandfather's pocket)...
It is doing great in a pot indoors, but plan to transplant it this Spring. |

May cold hardy figs (Celeste, Chicago Hardy, Brown Turkey) grow fine in Nova. I have an in-ground Celeste, and it's doing great.
Just make sure to protect your young in-ground Italian fig during its first (and second) winter. Make a cutting and grow it in a pot as a backup. |

There is a DMV fig group on FB if you want to join and ask more questions there.
Name of the group is DMV Fig Growers (Maryland, Virginia, and DC) |
| They’re really hard to kill. It’s the idiot proof fruit tree. I absolutely love mine, and it’s growing in very clay-heavy soil. |
| We have one and it grows fruit with no maintenance, but the animals eat the figs |

My fig does great, tons of fruit. My husband makes jam. Mine tends to be an every other year thing, big boom one year, bust the next.
The one thing is that the fruit does attract wasps so keep that in mind when planting. Mine is not near where the kids play. |
| Squirrels or birds or something get the figs. Neighbors put little bags around each one. |
| I'm in 22207 and I can think of two figs trees around here. |
| Figs grow very well in this area. Mine always attract a swarm of bald-faced hornets though. I have a Peter’s everbearing fig and an Italian honey fig. |
Oh no… are the yellow jackets around the figs? |
| They will grow fine. But good luck keeping raccoons and rodents off the fruit. |
I never went near the fig tree in my previous Silver Spring house after I saw a rat calmly perched on a twig chomping away. |
| Animals love the dogs and I would kee it in a pot bc they are very aggressive growers |
