Considering a house in Vienna.. AA family

Anonymous
Also, not sure if this should be in real estate or this Forum?
Really like the area overall.
The home would be inbound for one of the many very low population AA High Schools; How feasible would it be to commute to one of the more racially diverse private schools in the area? Are there shuttles etc., that students can take instead of the drive to some of these schools?
There doesnt seem to be ANY high achieving FCPS high schools with a solid AA population from what I could tell?
Would it make more sense to simply consider other areas? MoCo Schools have a high average AA population at most, but seem on average seem much lower rated than top rated FCPSchools, but not sure how much this impacts college acceptance? i.e graduating from a Wooten/Whitman etc. vs an Oakton/McLean/Madison.

Vienna is a great community with good schools and very welcoming.

However, Madison is the whitest high school in Fairfax County and about to get whiter.

Some other schools are more diverse than Madison due to significant Asian and Hispanic enrollment but don't have a lot of AA kids.

West Springfield is often considered the sweet spot for those looking for a highly rated school with a larger (in WSHS's case, about 13%) AA enrollment.

Thanks. Yeah, I saw WSHS on another thread and looked into it.. its quite a drive from the Vienna area but doable it seems. Do you know much about the supposed overcrowding at the school? It doesnt seem to affect performance metrics much if any from recent scores.

Where are you coming from and where are you commuting to?

The HS abutting Madison - Marshall, Oakton, Herndon - all have higher AA populations than Madison.

We are an AA family in Vienna - it’s true that it’s VERY white. If I had to do it all over again, I’d probably move to Reston. Same general area but a much more diverse population.

If you aren't happy with the Vienna community, why would you move to Vienna and then drive 35 minutes to get your kid to HS?

Its on the edge of Reston so theoretically South Lakes would be workable; it just didnt seem like one of the better schoools in any particular metric?

OP Here; The community seems wonderful and relaxed. I think school demographics where you may want a level of relatability for various reasons, is a separate thing.

I can appreciate that position but you will miss something by not being at the local schools. Because of whatever deal Vienna struck with FCPS, all the Vienna kids go to Madison. They all play in the same sports leagues, hang out at the same places, etc. If your kids go to WSHS, they will miss all of the Vienna community because their friend groups won't be a part of it. I think you are better off pushing into SLHS/Oakton/etc. then living in the town and placing your kids elsewhere.

I think somethings getting lost here. You would not live in Vienna and attend WSHS because you would not be in-bounds.

Many of the private schools do have buses. I live in Vienna (zoned for Oakton) and see buses for Potomac and Flint Hill, probably there are others. The information, but not the specific bus stops, is on individual private school websites.

OP, how are you evaluating "top" public schools? The rating sites are not reliable for that purpose.

Using USnews primarily.. No good? How are schools generally evaluated aside from site visits? Also thank you for the datapoint and info on bus stops.
