Should I be afraid of the dog regressing if her medical treatment is being done at the shelter

I adopted a heart worm positive dog. Her treatment is being sponsored and she will need to return to the shelter for a day to receive the vaccine treatment over 24 hours. She’s a very shy dog and was on the urgent list. She refused to walk while in the shelter and had to be put on a dolly to get her in the car. She’s been with me for almost 2 months now. Should I be afraid of her regressing or thinking she’s being returned? She’s doing very well now but treatment at our local vet is like $2500 so I’d like to use the free covered treatment but I’m afraid of hurting her emotionally.

It's going to be fine, OP. I suspect she will be stressed out, which isn't good, but there might not be a regression. Mostly I think she'll be extremely happy to return to you. I hope she recovers from her heartworm.

She will probably not be more stressed out at the shelter than she would be at the vet's office. She'll be taken care of and they will probably give medication to calm her . Using the shelter vet is fine

Getting picked up again by you will be at least as impactful as getting dropped off. She needs to learn you always come back, not that she never gets left anywhere. So I would consider it part of a bigger “she always comes back for me” training goal. I’m sure 24 hours at the shelter isn’t ideal for that, but things usually aren’t. Just work it into your bigger plan as best you can.

Can you send her with a favorite toy and something that smells like you?
