HS courses taken online via other vendors for credit recovery?

Anonymous
Hello,
Give they have changed most courses to in person for summer school I am curious if a MCPS high school student is able to taken online courses from accredited online schools or independent schools and have that course grade replace the one on the transcript as it would have if taken through online summer school via MCPS in the past. I know that certain courses much be taken through MCPS (like geometry?) but if one wanted to take algebra 2 online from apex learning or another online accredited school would that work for grade recovery? Insights appreciated please. Child will reach out to their counselor asap but curious if others have heard or know about this.

I tried to do this last year, because the MCPS schedule didn't work with something else my kid had to do last summer. The bureaucracy totally defeated me. I looked up the regulations, I researched the MDSE approved vendors (Apex was one). I emailed the counselor with all the information and the justification as to why my child could not do the MCPS provided course. After a long delay, the counselor indicated they would have to check with Central Office. Another long delay and then I was told that Central Office said no. I asked who/why and the counselor indicated that they did not have that information. I emailed the Principal to ask who at Central Office would make that decision, so that I could communicate with them about the reason for the decision. Multiple communications with the principal that she didn't respond to, and it was already part-way through June and I just gave up.

So best of luck to you, and if you figure out who at Central Office is responsible for these decisions, or what criteria are used to make those decisions, please share that information.
