Lodging near Shady Grove

Anonymous
My sister is driving up from VA Beach to start IVF at Shady Grove. She prefers to stay at a hotel near SG despite my offer for her and her DH to stay with me (I live in Centreville). I don't know the area up there that well - any hotels come to mind for those familiar with SG/Rockville?

There are several hotels at a nearby retail complex called Washingtonian at Rio. The Courtyard by Marriott there is nice but there is also a regular Marriott and a Residence Inn (I think). You can walk to many restaurants from any of the places there.

There is also a new Hilton Garden Inn hotel within walking distance of the SG office but I'd rather stay at Rio myself.

Yeah the Rio has shopping, restaurants and is in a nicely landscaped complex, BUT if she's sensitive to children there are a LOT of kids there. Just a thought. If she'd like nicer digs there is a Crowne Plaza less than half a mile away -- 3 Research Court, Rockville, MD; (301) 840-0200. Also, has she asked at SG if they are affiliated with any hotel -- who knows, they might be?

I'd recommend staying in a hotel in downtown Bethesda. It's a bit further but not by much and there is so much more to do....much more urban and completely walkable. There are tons of restaurants and movie theatres and boutiques. If you're staying for more than a few days I would go there. The RIO is nice but you'll finish exploring what there is to offer really quick.

It's about 15 minutes from Shady Grove office and close to 30 minutes if it's during rush hour with really bad traffic. Usually monitoring appointments are super early in the morning so you'll probably miss the worst traffic between 8 and 9 am.

The Hyatt is really nice if you can swing it.

Seriously?

While I understand from personal experience that it's difficult to be around children when you are having trouble trying to conceive I think it's completely over the top to avoid going out in public to avoid seeing children. I haven't recommended that she stay in a school yard or playground. It's a city that's walkable with restaurants, etc. and yes there will be all kinds of people around just like there is everywhere.

She's coming to SG for IF treatment and when you are going through a treatment you can be more sensitive than usual. I don't mean avoid kids in your normal life, but I don't make a practice of going out in Bethesda after my IUI for the simple reason that there are TONS of families. And no it isn't just like it is elsewhere -- I live 2 miles from there and it's seriously kid heavy.

And you don't have to get bitchy with the school yard/playground comment. We are supposed to support each other on the boards. I wasn't trying to attack your suggestion, just giving a different viewpoint.
