Dealing with teachers who play favorites and impact on letters of recommendation for selective high schools

Anonymous
Parent of a 7th grader. My child (and others) are struggling with a teacher who plays favorites and tends to target and shame students who are not in this select group. My child is doing well academically in the class but seems really down and is starting to hate school. We are thinking about next year and potential letters required for selective high schools (this is a core class). I would like to talk to the teacher, but I also worry about making things worse/the teacher retaliating. I did talk to the teacher in the fall based on a comment on the report card but did not find it to be helpful. I'm not sure that my child would get a good recommendation from this teacher regardless of what I do. I think that they just don't click. For what it's worth, this teacher rubs me the wrong way, too. Has anyone faced anything similar?

The selective HSs ask for recs for your 8th grade teachers.

Thanks! Is that always the case? I heard it’s a mix.

They ask for 8th. Some will accept 7th.

Who knows what next year will bring, but that’s a relief. Thank you!

Our selective school didn't specify for the 2025 lottery season. DC used 8th grade ELA and 7th grade Math (also sports coach) for letters.
