Phones in high school

Anonymous
Anyone lock down their high schooler’s phone while they’re at school? I’m sure it’s not many.

Found out recently that my kid has been on her phone more than she should during class even after teachers have told her to put it away. And her grades are suffering.

I’m not sure how to do it as the iPhone controls have not worked that well in the past but I’m going to look into it.

Our high school doesn't allow phone use in class (MCPS) and it's largely enforced so thankfully, no worries there.

No. My teen bookworm is on her chromebook reading and barely listening to a word the teachers say. But she gets straight As, so I don't say a word.

My kid is in MCPS too but I guess her teachers aren’t enforcing the rules so much … or my kid is just breaking them with no repercussions.

What is the school consequence? Nothing? Time to reconsider the school

Our public HS doesn’t enforce but grades are good so I let it go. If they weren’t I would probably do something though.

Take the phone away. She doesn't need it, and definitely not while at school.

Our middle school and high school have them leave their phones and pick them up once school ends.

She will get around any controls you put on the phone. Take her phone for a while as punishment until her grades improve. Don’t let her bring it to school. This is the only way.

We try but they get around it.

Brick? Brick it before school except the few apps you think she needs and she can unbrick it when she gets back to the physical brick device at home. It is not possible to override unless you use one of the five emergency unbrickings, which she will quickly run out of if she uses them.

Side note. As a sub at MCPS, high schools vary on enforcing phones in classes. Churchill seems really good about it. Kids walk in and put their phones in the pouches. Other schools not so much. I wish it were enforced more widely.

Take the iPhone away and get her a flip phone.
