| Does anyone have Type 2 and is not overweight? I was recently diagnosed and everything I read talks about losing weight. I am actually in good shape, work out 6 days a week (weights and cardio classes). Not that that will change anything, I'm just bummed. |
| of course. being overweight is a risk factor but not the cause. |
Please look into LADA - Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults. It's actually Type I diabetes that presents much later in life. Without knowing anything else about how you were diagnosed it's hard to say if this would be applicable, but my spouse was misdiagnosed 25+ years ago. Type II is so common that I don't think providers really think beyond it. |
| How old are you? What race? Any pancreatic cancer in your family? Type 2 can be hereditary. |
| Were you ever prediabetic in your prior bloodwork?? |
| How do you know if you are T2 (vs T1)? |
| Are you on any other medications? Some meds increase the risk of T2. My MIL is diabetic and DH is pre, neither of them is overweight but they’re both on statins. MIL was told it’s likely because of the statin. |

Yes, I have always been thin and have exercised but was diagnosed with type 2 several years ago, it is very common in my family to be diagnosed with type 2 after the age of 50 so I wasn’t surprised.
Fortunately, with medication, careful eating and exercising none of my relatives have had any serious complication. There is definitely a hereditary component. |
| I have a bunch of thin fit type 2s in my family. Obviously heredity is in the mix, but I’m not convinced it isn’t LADA or MODY or some other slow progressing & later onset form of type 1 diabetes. No one will do any follow up or testing so I’ll never know, but in your case i would insist on ruling out LADA and MODY so you know you’re treating properly. |
| A contributing factor in type 2 is also overconsumption of sugar. In most people, eating too much sugar results in excess weight gain, but you can eat too much sugar and not be fat, especially if you exercise. Cut the sugar to as close to nill as possible while you research the testing others mentioned. |
| Sometimes it’s just genetic. 85% of diabetics are overweight, but 15% are not. That is still millions of people who are diabetic with a healthy weight. |
| Are you Asian? Read ‘the thin diabetics’. It’s a good book. Asians are more predisposed to T2D than other races due to genetics. |
Could this be due to overconsumption of rice? |
| I was just diagnosed. I am not overweight. My doctor said I do not need to lose anything. My immediate family members are all diabetic. I have bad genes. |
