The Sweet Sixteen invitations are rolling in. What did you do for your daughter’s birthday?

Many are at Fogo or Ballrooms/Party Halls so far. It seems like people spend quite a bit of money on these events.

Where did you have your daughter’s party? How much did it end up costing? How many months before did you start planning?

I don't know anyone who had a sweet sixteen (and I have a college kid and high schooler). We're not having one either.

Must be specific to your circles. I don’t know anyone doing this either (& I have a 16 yo).

Nothing out of the normal house parties for my 16yr old DD.

Only one. I think of it as a Southern thing or people showing off. It’s outdated

My daughter went out to dinner with a big group of her friends. She chose the restaurant. We brought her cake and covered the costs for her friends.

This. I would consider it very tacky and try-hard.

16 is my DDs golden birthday. We are poor though so no lavish parties.

That's what some kids do for their regular birthdays.

That's not nice, PP. We're not in a circle where anyone does Sweet Sixteens, but they're culturally important in certain groups. Don't piss on other people's traditions, OK? You wouldn't want others to piss on yours...

Best wishes for your debutante ball!

Do boys do anything or is this strictly a girl thing?

I remember going to a few Quinceanearas and Sweet Sixteens for girls but never anything for boys (okay, maybe a few Bar Mitzvahs at age 13 but nothing in high school years)?

We just had family over for a birthday dinner. She got very nice gifts.

My niece and nephew each had a family and friends brunch at their house. Catered buffet.

LOL, we let her choose a restaurant for a (small) family dinner and she had requested an ice cream cake for afterwards. So it ended up costing (2 years ago) around $200 and the planning took a few text messages.
